ipod shuffle play

I have been using the shuffle play since the software update for the iPod which allows my 3g ipod to shuffle songs, and it seems to weigh too heavily towards higher rated songs. Does the INTERNET have any idea of the ratio which builds the shuffle list? It seems anything but random.
So, I am going back to smart playlists to generate random listening.
