Across the Universe? Help!!!!!!

Rex says that the new film Across the Universe“strangely fetishizes the Beatles while still looking not quite horrible.”

I dunno. i’d say ‘almost’ not quite horrible. I guess it’s novel that someone has the balls to score their “life-love-and-strife-in-the-60’s” movie in chronologically against the Beatles catalog - with second rate performances by musicians other than said Mop-Tops, no less.

I’ll admit it. When it comes to the Beatles, I am a purist. (Siderant: Even Nick Cave can’t get a Beatles cover right. His versions of Let It Be and Here Comes the Sun in theory should be amazing. Sadly, thats not the case. Fiona Apple’s version of ‘Across the Universe”, does get my thumbs up however.)

Ahem.. where was I? Right.

I guess this resonates for me because I’ve been buying my daughter a Beatles CD for each birthday. I’m not sure if she will ever care about the Beatles as much as I did (and, as you probably guessed by now, I was obessed), but I’ve always wanted to turn her on to the originals, so that she can judge for herself.

Frightening to thing that she might say, ten yeard from now “Wasn’t this song in that lame movie about the 60’s?”. I can only imagine the history lesson for her which would follow.

Anyway. I need to go get a copy of Help for next week.

old views

Tonight’s web surfing produced a good collection of early Kodachrome images at DailyKos, followed by an extended surf at  the Charles Weever Cushman collection digging through his pictures of San Francisco.  The quality of the colors are great.

These reminded me of some color images of World War I (also here).  And don’t forget the good old Library of Congress FSA color photos.

The Tielman Brothers

How is it that I have gone almost 37 years on this earth without knowing about The Tielman Brothers, or having seen these clips. Amazing.’Rolling Rock’ - Spectacular!: ‘Black Eyes’ - Too cool:

Crazy Kids

Students Allegedly Post Fake Snow Day - New York Times

Two teenage girls are accused of gaining unauthorized access to their school district’s Web site and posting a fake winter school closing, police said.

Now, I’m not advocating that anyone hack their school website, but that was a pretty good prank.

my (feed)reading list

Last week I had the pleasure to speak to the students of ADVT498: A Hands-On Approach to Interactive Technology and Strategy about what I do at CNET as a product manager, and web/interactive media in general. Despite a couple technical hiccups, I think things went well, students asked some interesting questions, and an hour-plus of our web-based conference flew by. (Thanks, Sydney!)

I mentioned that I would share my reading list, which I have compiled into a handy OPML file which can be loaded into most feed readers. It’s somewhat organized and categorized by topic. At least it made sense at the time… your milage may vary.

Much of my reading is about online media, web development, web design, emerging trends and new technologies.
Hopefully this can serve as a good jumping off point for folks interested in these topics get started with a full RSS reading experience.

If you have any questions, feel free to drop a note in the comments.
