Hilly Kristal Dead

I’m not exactly sure what a ‘rock midwife’ is, but Hilly Kristal, founder of the seminal rock club CBGB’s died. I’m quite proud to have played on that stage. Nevermind that it was playing to 5 people, but it sounded great.

My Bloody Valentine reunion?

I mean… has Entertainment Weekly EVER been wrong about this kind of stuff?

Bikes Are Not Transportation?

Secretary Peters Says Bikes “Are Not Transportation”

“Which ‘Secretary’?”, you might be asking.

A: U.S. Secretary of Transportation Mary Peters.

ecto three

For all you mac-using bloggers who haven’t found a blogging app to get excited about, maybe ecto3 (currently in alpha release) will show some promise.

I’m posting with it now, and it feels more ‘mac-like’ (whatever that means), and certainly more intuitive. Nice work!

Oakland Crimespotting

Oakland Crimespotting is an impressive interactive map of criminal activity in Oakland, CA. Very interesting. I didn’t see a San Francisco version, though.

The Landlord

Taking some time off work gives me the opportunity to catch up on silly internet videos which I missed the first time around.

Possibly not safe for work if swearing toddlers meets that definition:

RIP - Tony Wilson

Tony Wilson, founder of Factory Records, has died at age 57. I grew up listening to Joy Division, New Order, A Certain Ratio, and much more from that fantastic label. Tony was immortalized in the film 24hr Party People, a surprisingly good (and entertaining) look at that music scene.

More at the BBC and NME.

mp3 blog induced flashbacks to a former life

This Internet thing never ceases to amaze me.

Here I am, minding my own business, when someone I don’t know posts a really thoughtful tribute to my old band, posting album artwork and mp3’s of long out of print records (you know, the vinyl kind?) from what seems a lifetime ago.

Lesson One : Never underestimate the power of music to connect and transform. Here we are 15+ years after the fact, and someone was moved enough to put this effort to introduce the world to music that existed in such small circles, but clearly had an impact.

Lesson Two : The Internet remembers.

I’m really proud of the long, hard, and loud hours my band-mates and I practicing in dank basements, and toiling in occasionally attended gigs across the country. Oh yeah… and the debt. But even if no one bothered to remember this music, I’d do it over in a heartbeat.

That someone cared to remember, I’m flattered.

Another mp3 blog gave a shout out to Giants Chair, an incredible trio from Kansas City for whom I had the great honor to release records for under the guise Caulfield Records.

And amazingly, another part of team Caulfield, Christie Front Drive, is reuniting for one night in Denver.

Which reminds me… I need to buy a plane ticket to Denver.

XRAY vision for web developers

This is sweet.

One of my most used web development tools just got some serious competition. I have used MODi for a couple years now, and really haven’t dug into all the advanced usage of it, but XRAY looks pretty nice indeed.

I never jumped on the firebug train, mostly because Firefox on OSX is so dang SLOW. I much prefer Camino, thankyouverymuch.

What’s in your webdev toolbox these days?
