RIP - Tony Wilson
August 15th, 2007 music
Tony Wilson, founder of Factory Records, has died at age 57. I grew up listening to Joy Division, New Order, A Certain Ratio, and much more from that fantastic label. Tony was immortalized in the film 24hr Party People, a surprisingly good (and entertaining) look at that music scene.

mp3 blog induced flashbacks to a former life
August 8th, 2007 music
This Internet thing never ceases to amaze me.
Here I am, minding my own business, when someone I don’t know posts a really thoughtful tribute to my old band, posting album artwork and mp3’s of long out of print records (you know, the vinyl kind?) from what seems a lifetime ago.
Lesson One : Never underestimate the power of music to connect and transform. Here we are 15+ years after the fact, and someone was moved enough to put this effort to introduce the world to music that existed in such small circles, but clearly had an impact.
Lesson Two : The Internet remembers.
I’m really proud of the long, hard, and loud hours my band-mates and I practicing in dank basements, and toiling in occasionally attended gigs across the country. Oh yeah… and the debt. But even if no one bothered to remember this music, I’d do it over in a heartbeat.
That someone cared to remember, I’m flattered.
Another mp3 blog gave a shout out to Giants Chair, an incredible trio from Kansas City for whom I had the great honor to release records for under the guise Caulfield Records.
And amazingly, another part of team Caulfield, Christie Front Drive, is reuniting for one night in Denver.
Which reminds me… I need to buy a plane ticket to Denver.
grind on!
July 28th, 2007 music

I’ve been a Nick Cave fan for 20+ years, and I finally got a chance to see him play again (the first time was 1989 in Los Angeles) with his new band Grinderman @ the Great American Music Hall. The show was sold out long ago but my source came through. (SKP!) I hadn’t heard much from his new band, but it’s Nick. They could have played cards and it would have been great.
They played a grungy, dirty, bluesy, hairy, sweaty, loud set and came back two encores playing Bad Seeds songs. Extra special bonus : Blixa Bargeld singing ‘The Weeping Song’.
So good.

Punk Planet magazine - R.I.P.P
June 18th, 2007 music
Well, damn. Sad to see Punk Planet go down. While I was running my record label, PP was at the top of the heap. I always admired the quality and intelligence of the zine. The good news, is that the book company will continue.

How eclectic is the musical preference of berniemcginn?

82/100 according to this neat little script which checks your recently played tracks at last.fm.
It’s only take three years for me to catch on to AudioScrobbler/Last.FM. I joined way back in July of 2004, but since then have only managed to log 249 tracks. But since we’ve been getting settled in the new place, it’s been a bit easier to have music a part of the day-to-day routine.
Just saying that is a bit weird. The stereo would normallly be the first item moved in and set-up, but my music listening habits have definitely changed. It’s difficult to pinpoint when and why. I normally don’t listen to music on my walk/commute, and I never listen to music at work (just not feasible). It will help TONS when I figure out how the apartment music listening set-up should work. At the moment, I am thinking of a networked hard-drive foor my iTunes library + Airport Express streaming to a smaller stereo shelf unit.
I’d be interested in getting some lazyweb suggestions on all of the above… I want to keep my ecletic score high, you know.
The Guitar Zeros
April 25th, 2007 music
I regret missing out on this performance. The Guitar Zeros have hacked the Guitar Hero game controller to play samples and midi sounds from their laptops (from what I have gathered), and have come up with some pretty cool math rock.
Their site has some good audio.
